Once A Month Cooking Recipes (Biscuits and Bread)

I am so excited about trying my hand at some new recipes! Here is what I tried out this month:


I made 4 batches of these yesterday.  The recipe made about 8 biscuits each.

Biscuit Recipe (thanks to Debbie Bailey)


2 cups self rising flour
egg sized scoop of shortening or butter
3/4 c. of milk (start with this amt. and move up if needed)
1 tsp. lemon juice (if using regular milk rather than buttermilk)

Mix the shortening/butter into the mixture with a pastry blender, knives,or hands.  When the shortening/butter is blended in pour in the milk and blend with spoon.  If mixture is too dry add a little more milk, if too sticky add a little more flour.  Don't work it too much though.  Pour the lemon juice that you will add to the mixture in a glass measuring cup and allow time to ferment while you are mixing the shortening/butter and flour mixture.

You can then either roll out the dough and cut the biscuits or simply use a spoon.  If using a spoon, spoon out a lump and roll it between your hands (floured). Coat your pan with vegetable oil and dip both sides of the dough before placing on the sheet.  You can bake them at 450 degrees for 10 minutes or until brown.

Freezing Instructions:  Follow all the above but before they turn brown pull them out of the oven, cool a little, and then freeze in plastic bag.

These recipe is both easy and delicious!  A family favorite now!

Homemade Whole Wheat Bread Recipe from The Bread Machine Cookbook

This bread was delicious!  I used the dough cycle to get it going and then finished baking it in the oven.  Thanks for sharing this book with me Melissa!  Trey, our oldest, said "yummy" over and over!
